Great workout!
This is an excellent workout. I have worn out several of these NordicTrack ski machines - it takes me about 6 years of use then they are pretty much shot. You can replace the critical parts but the better way is to find a used one in excellent condition that was built in Minnesota when they first came out. The later units made in Asia are built to the same drawings but you will quickly discover the quality is not the same. The workout is about 7 - 14 METS depending on how you set up the upper body and tension on the skis. Not everyone finds it easy to use - unless you have a fairly good sense of balance it can be awkward.

BUSY READER SUMMARY: I share this from eighteen years of NordicTrack use. If you are lucky enough to find one of these "legacy" Elites--buy it! An incredible blend of industrial technology and the beauty of fine solid hardwood. And, as a legacy NordicTrack, it is built in the grand tradition of the older NordicTracks, which far exceed the quality of the more recent production models. It is indeed, "The Best" ever made. The complete body workout is all one could desire in a tactile experience that is also health promoting. This is, simply, a classy example of a functional and motivational piece of industrial art, and, a sound investment all around.

BACKGROUND: I upgraded from a 1991 NordicTrack Pro, a very fine machine itself, to a 1991 NordicTrack Elite. (Look for the date of manufacture sticker underneath the chasis of a NordicTrack.) I've used NordicTrack (NT) skiers for eighteen years regularly. This is my second legacy model and third overall.
THE LEGACY ELITE EXPERIENCE: The difference between the two legacy models is striking as one is inspired to begun one's workout by the shear beauty of the wood and smooth metal structure and trim (see pictures at this Amazon site). As one begins one's workout, the smooth sound of solid walnut wood skies rolling gently over well aligned wheels is a delight to the ears. In front of the user is a solid beam of oiled walnut leading to a workout computer. Then, continuing up the beam and at its end, is the oiled walnut-accented upper body workout tensioner control with a calibrated guage. As one glances down to the vertical support post to adjust the lower body tensioner, via a simple turn knob, one is greeted by the sight of more solid oiled walnut and finely detailed and accented skis moving between even more solid wood side rails and supports--all oiled walnut. The lower body tensioner setting is displayed incrementally via a gauge over the covered flywheel. The supple and contoured hip pad gives a sense of added stability as legs, body and arms benefit from using this product.
THE WORKOUT EXPERIENCE: This unit is also rock solid in its functionally. The vertical post is totally welded to the base for stability. An hour into my workout and the skis and upper body unit are working as they did at the start--no wiggles and shakes like my other NTs. I've made a few tweaks to settings as I work out and want to challenge myself, or, to reward myself with a small resistance break--but I'm in total control as the unit responds linearly to my changes in settings. It's as if I'm driving a fully "tricked out" luxury car. Incline setting, at the start of my workout, is a cinch with an elegantly designed and easy to use, lever-activated hydraulic system. My wife loves it as it makes it easy for her to use the unit--AND, for me to reestablish my preferences. No more lifting and leg pin-setting as is the case with the Pro model! Everything is simple to adjust with this legacy (pre 1998) Elite.

AS AN ASIDE, the legacy NordicTracks (pre-November 1998) are those of high quality, and parts are available from select sources. NordicTrack was purchased by CML in the early 1990s and went out of business in October 1998. Subsequently, I regrettably purchased a post-CML NT "Elite" (aerodynamically styled with thin veneer wood accents and a lot of plastic, AND looks and feels entirely different from the legacy Elite) which fell apart after a few years of disappointing performance and tangled cords. NordicDanny (NordicFitnessTrack) appears to focus on the legacy NT models. The legacy NTs of the original NordicTrack and CML days can last a lifetime. My "Pro" model only required some ski cleaning, side wax and a careful drop of oil in a limited number of places in all its years of use. Now, with quality spare parts available, legacy NTs just keep on going--and that's great to know. But I digress...

LIKE ACQUIRING ART: Before purchasing this legacy Elite unit, I've never owned the very best of anything--I'm retired from the field of public education--but, my "day" has now come. I now own the best NordicTrack ever built--and it's built very very well and looks oh so good. Who would not want to keep up with their fitness program with this NT? Please see the customer image that I've posted here. I now include my NT on our home tour for new visitors. It truly defines, "industrial art." It IS a work of art, and, in a class of its own among the other fine legacy NTs
VALUE: Factoring inflation here and the fact that these legacy NT Elites can last a lifetime, we are getting a $3000+ value today. There is only a very limited supply of these in existence. Restoration and refurbishment are the only alternatives. I've also included a picture of the remarkable packaging by NordicFitnessTrack required to get this safely to me. This legacy Elite NT is destined to only increase in value. The shipping and handling fee was fully earned and justified.

All things being equal, when air is compressed, is has more kinetic energy. (Demonstrated by the pressure.) So, if you release the gas and water vapor into the same hose while it's still under pressure, the water will cool the moment the pressure is released because the air expends kinetic energy when it fills the new, larger space. As it ejects from the hose, if it goes from 4 ATM to .9 ATM, it will cool the water accordingly, because the vapor is mixed in with it.I think.

Question : Need to repair old, out of warranty Nordic Track ski machine?
I purchased a top-of-the line Nordic Track Medalist Special Edition ski machine in 1994. Nordic Track went bankrupt in '98 and sold out to a company called Icon Health and Fitness. They sell a ski machine, but only one model, and the parts are not compatible with my machine. The problem with my machine is that one of the skis rubs against the sides of the wood. To repair it would be very expensive. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to have this fixed, i.e. a local outfit that repairs old ski machines?

About 13 years ago I had a "ski machine" type workout machine. All it had was 2 platforms for your feet and 2 extended handles to hold. Then with your legs you glided back & forth. And with you arms you did the same while holding the handles. IS this just an outdated machine or can I get it somewhere? Thanks! I have seen the nordic track version but that isn't what I want. I want the basic version. Thanks again.

I just bought a used one and I'm telling you, that machine wears me out!!!!!! Cheap, durable and low impact. Its better than a $700 junky eliptical machine that will last maybe 6 months. Nordic Track is the brand name for ski machines (just like we use the brand names Kleenex, ChapStick and Band-Aid to refer to the item, whether they're of that brand name or not). And, I'm going to guess that calorie counting/burning includes the arm movements. They're going to maximize their numbers for the sake of advertising.

Question : i do 1 hr a day on the eliptical or the ski machine and alternate muscle grps afterward and i do this 6 days?

If you want to do 1 hr on the eliptical make sure you do speed intervals. Like go really fast for 2 min. then slow down, then put the resistance on high. Changing the speed like that shocks your body and in turn you burn more calories. Keep you diet healthy, don't starve yourself, but cut out soda and sweets. You can have one sweet every once in a while. You should also do weight lifting. Not to bulk up, but to get lean muscle, muscle burns more weight than fat. If you felt heavier you may be about to get your period. Almost forgot, the most important part is to drink a ton of water. It flushes the old stuff out of your body. Don't over do anything or you'll get tired of it fast. Good luck, be smart about everything
